VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
VOCs are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. While most people can smell high levels of some VOCs, other VOCs have no odor.
Where it comes from: There are thousands of different VOCs produced and used in our daily lives such as household products (paint, wood preservatives, aerosol sprays, cleansers and disinfectants, moth repellents and air fresheners, etc) and from activities at home (cooking, dry cleaning, smoking, wood burning stoves, etc).
What it causes: VOCs can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation as well as headaches, loss of coordination, and nausea. They may also cause damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Some are suspected or known to cause cancer and asthma.
CO is an odorless, colorless and toxic gas. Since CO is impossible to see, taste or smell, it can kill you before you are aware it is in your home.
Where it comes from: CO comes from various sources at home such as unvented kerosene and gas space heaters; leaking chimneys and furnaces; fireplaces, gas stoves, generators and other gasoline powered equipments; automobile exhaust from attached garages;
tobacco smoke, etc.
What it causes: CO causes harmful health effects by reducing oxygen delivery to the body’s organs (like the heart and brain) and tissues. At extremely high levels, CO can cause death.
Carbon dioxide accumulation inside the home is normally related directly to the number of occupants.
Where it comes from: This is usually highest where homeowners and pets, if applicable, spend most of their time. Other sources may include space heaters, clothes dryers, stoves, or any other unvented gas-burning appliance.
What it causes: High levels of carbon dioxide decreases oxygen level in the body, hampering the flow of oxygen to the brain. This makes you sleepy, lazy and low in energy.

These are fine dust particles or droplets in the air that are 2.5 microns or less in width. These are small enough that the body cannot filter them when inhaled and thus enter our lungs and absorbed into the blood and may cause adverse health effects.
Where it comes from: Fine particles are from cooking (e.g., frying, sautéing, and broiling), burning candles or oil lamps, tobacco smoke, and operating fireplaces and fuel-burning space heaters (e.g., kerosene heaters). These are everywhere especially on carpets, stuffed toys, upholstered furniture, pillows, blankets and other beddings.
What it causes: Short-term health effects such as eye, nose, throat and lung irritation, coughing, sneezing, runny nose and shortness of breath. Long term exposure is associated with increased rates of chronic bronchitis, reduced lung function and increased mortality from lung cancer and heart disease.
